Red Palm Weevil

Red Palm Weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus)

These damage palm trees by excavating holes in the trunks. As you can imagine, they have been deemed a major pest of palm oil plantations. Lucky for this guy, he’s in a coffee plantation.

An interesting fact about beetles (the weevil is part of the order Coleoptera) is that their forewings are hardened, protective sheaths that prevent damage to the wings while they dig in hard substrate such as wood. These guys are built for it.

The other cool thing about these is the antennae are mounted on the snout.
